CODY (AP) - Cody is making a push to land the headquarters of a growing company that provides English language instruction to students in Asia using Internet video conferencing.
James Klessens of Forward Cody says the economic development group is trying to bring Eleutian Technology to town.
Eleutian is now based in Ten Sleep. The company has satellite offices in Powell and Cody, among other Wyoming locations.
As its business has grown, Eleutian has looked to expand its corporate headquarters. The company is seeking a $3 million grant from the Wyoming Business Council to build a new 10,000-square-foot office building and teaching center.
Company representatives repeatedly have said they would prefer to stay in Ten Sleep, but some members of the 315-member community have expressed concerns about the impact of new development, and the town of Ten Sleep opted not to sponsor Eleutian's grant application.
"We absolutely need more space," said Brian Holiday, Eleutian board member and general counsel. "We want to stay in Ten Sleep if it's possible."
The Washakie County Commission may have cleared the way for Eleutian to stay put when it voted to sign on as the grant sponsor. Holiday said the company is working out details with the county.
But for the time being, other communities, including Cody, are making their pitches to be Eleutian's new home.
Klessens said he planned to send the company a relocation proposal.
The primary goal of Cody's lobbying is not to steal the company away from Ten Sleep, but rather to ensure Eleutian stays in northern Wyoming because of the income it contributes to the region's economy, he said.
"I'll love it if they come to Cody, I'll like it if they stay in Ten Sleep, I'll hate it if they leave the area," Klessens said. "If we lose this company out of the Big Horn Basin, we're losing $2 million."
