On the Net
At OverheardAtTheBeach.com, eavesdropping gets its day in the sun.
The Web site is a summer special from the "Overheard" series that began with OverheardInNewYork.com, which caught snippets of the gabbing of passers-by on the streets of the Big Apple, and followed with OverheardInTheOffice, an offshoot that brought watercooler chitchat into the conversation.
Each of the three sites take submitted quotes from anyone who cares to make the effort. If your quote passes muster - and as long as you weren't a part of the conversation in question - it will soon pop up on the Web site.
Recently overheard on a Long Island beach was a woman who yells to her husband, "Murray! Cover up! Your business is hanging out of your bathing suit!"
The husband replies, nonplussed, "That business closed down years ago."
Another interaction, overheard on Georgia's Tybee Island begins with a father asking his little girl: "What grows in the marsh, baby?"
Little girl: "Marshmallows?"
Father, turning to mother: "You want her to go to what college?"
OverheardAtTheBeach and its brethren are in this way a compendium of the absurdities of conversation - snapshots of reality comedy, sometimes perceived only by an outsider.
So next time you're sunning on the beach, that guy with a metal detector might be fishing for more than coins.
youtuber of the week
In this clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1gmnLX6DoE&search=WNYW), we see New York Fox affiliate, WNYW, broadcasting a story during the morning show "Good Day New York" on how easily bikes are stolen in the city. Brothers Casey and Van Neistat demonstrate this by cutting through a chain with an angle grinder. Casey pretends to have been cut by the grinder and flops around on the sidewalk - a slightly lame and inappropriate joke, many would say. But it's the reaction of "Good Day" co-host Jodi Applegate that's made a version of this cycling fiasco the week's most viewed video on YouTube. Applegate is very quickly offended that her expose (that comes across essentially as a how-to guide for stealing bikes) hasn't been taken seriously. Wagging her finger, she says: "There are children watching. That was not funny! That was TOTALLY uncool!"

"Let Down," by Easy Star All-Stars featuring Toots and the Maytals. "Let Down" is the first single from the forthcoming "Radiodread" album, an entire disc covering Radiohead's classic 1997 album "OK Computer" by the same reggae crew that made "Dub Side of the Moon" in 2003. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead have reportedly given their thumbs-up to the upbeat, soulful version of "Let Down," complete with lilting horns. The bleakest of bands is now welcome at the dance party. It's never felt so good to be "crushed like a bug in the ground."
