A college education is possible for three youth impacted by Boys & Girls Clubs as the University of Wyoming awards its first three Great Futures Gold Standard Scholarships. This competitive scholarship covers full tuition and fees at the University of Wyoming for four years. The 2018 recipients are Romello Wallace and Dylan Miller from Cheyenne Central High School and Amber Sessock from Dubois High School.
The collaboration, as part of the “WY Not Me Project,” was announced by University of Wyoming President Dr. Laurie Nichols in the fall of 2017. As part of the partnership, the university has opened its doors to all Boys & Girls Clubs from across the state for campus visits, tours, and tickets to a home football game for a taste of campus life. The intention is to plant the seed of the possibility of college for youth and demonstrate the potential that lies beyond high school.
To qualify for the award, students must be Wyoming high school seniors and must have participated with a Wyoming Boys & Girls Club for at least two years. The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and financial need. Applicants were asked to submit essays discussing their plans to reach their personal full potential as responsible, caring citizens and how the “Code of the West” inspires or guides them in their daily lives.
“The Great Futures Gold Standard Scholarship offers a tremendous opportunity for Wyoming Boys & Girls Club youth. The scholarships will help Dylan and Romello as they transition from high school to college, allowing them the opportunity to focus on their education instead of how to pay for their education,” said Rolinda Sample, CEO, Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne.
“As a tiny club with a huge heart, we could not be more proud of Amber Sessock’s accomplishments, and can’t wait to follow her impact at the University of Wyoming,” said Jeda Higgs, CEO, Boys & Girls Club of Dubois.
The Great Futures Gold Standard Scholarship will be an annual award for up to three deserving Club youth. More information can be found at bit.ly/greatfuturesgoldstandard.
