FISH
Ice and fishing conditions reported Tuesday. Check ice thickness and use caution on the ice. Conditions can change daily.
Big cat: Congratulations to Austin Swingholm, age 14 of Casper, who hauled in a 16-pound, 6-ounce catfish Saturday in the Wild West Winter Carnival Ice Fishing Derby at Boysen Reservoir.
North Platte Region
Ice fishing is good at Alcova Reservoir using minnows and worms for rainbow trout. The ice is 12 to 14 inches at Black Beach and Cottonwood, but getting "iffy" on the west side. The road is snow covered going in to Pathfinder Reservoir, which has kept most ice anglers away. It will be plowed for the fishing derby, Feb. 9-10.
Trout fishing is difficult on the North Platte River at Gray Reef due to cold and wind, but fly anglers are catching some trout on vanilla buggers.
- Yolanda Strand, Sloane's General Store in Alcova
Last weekend was a little slow for most ice anglers at Glendo Reservoir. A storm front moved through and beat up the ice a bit. Some stable weather should improve the ice and the fishing. Try minnows, jigging spoons and jigging slabs for perch and walleye.
-Bob Shelver, Curly's Leisure Sports in Douglas
Ice fishing is fair to good at Lake Hattie for perch and trout and fair to good at Alsop Lake for trout. The trout bite is a little better at Alsop. Jigs, spoons and meal worms are your best bet at either lake. Take a snowmachine to one of the Snowy Range lakes or head to Curt Gowdy State Park for some excellent ice fishing for trout.
-Carl Smith, West Laramie Fly Store
Flaming Gorge Reservoir is good for rainbow trout and ling (burbot), a little slow for lake trout. Ice fishers are finding the rainbows mostly in the shallows and the backs of bays. Try jigs tipped with meal worms. Ling fishing is good at night using glow-in-the-dark jigs tipped with sucker meat or a dead minnow on tip-ups or a jigging rod. The ling are also biting at Fontenelle and Big Sandy reservoirs.
