North Platte and Southeast

Trout fishing was good over the weekend on the Gray Reef of the North Platte River where the water flow is 500 cfs. Leeches, red San Juan worms, scuds and assorted midge nymphs have been working well.

- Mark Boname, Platte River Fly Shop in Casper

The fishing slowed down at Alcova Reservoir recently but anglers using worms and chartreuse glitter marshmallows are catching some small trout. No reports from Pathfinder Reservoir where not many anglers have been heading to lately.

- Yolanda Strand, Sloane's General Store in Alcova

If you catch some decent weather for boating, the walleye fishing is good at Glendo Reservoir using minnows and jigs in 8 to 10 feet of water. If and when the weather turns cold, ice fishermen should be in store for a very good season.

- Bob Shelver, Curly's Leisure Sports in Douglas

For diehards, the Upper North Platte River still has open water on most of the stretch between Six Mile and Saratoga. Anglers are catching trout by bouncing nymphs along the bottom.

Lake Hattie is your best bet for finding a lake with open water in the Laramie region. Other smaller lakes are getting icy.

- Travis Wolfe, Four Seasons Anglers in Laramie

Around the state…

The fishing continues to be very good at Boysen Reservoir jigging plastics in 15 to 20 feet of water for walleye up to 8.5 pounds.

- Rob Davis, Wyoming Walleye Circuit

The fishing for burbot is good at Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Use "anything that glows in the dark" at 20 to 40 feet. Anglers are also catching some rainbow trout and small mackinaws, but the burbot are the hot bite right now.

- Lauretta Tanner, Buckboard Marina at Flaming Gorge

Anglers braving the cold in the Cody area are catching lots of fish on the tailwater stretch of the Lower Shoshone River. Trout fishing is very good using BWO and midge dries, beadhead pheasant tails, North Fork specials, copper Johns and streamers.

Trout fishing is good at Buffalo Bill Reservoir for boat anglers using spoons and spinners. Fly fishers are doing well from shore using buggers, Clausers and double bunnies. Other lakes are getting icy.

Some good reports have also come in on the Big Horn River around Thermopolis.

- Tim Wade, North Fork Anglers in Cody

The Open Spaces fishing report is compiled on Tuesdays by Star-Tribune outdoors editor Wes Smalling.
