Local fire officials are warning the public of a phone scam by someone claiming to be collecting donations for severely burned Wyoming children.

The person seeking the donations claims he is a firefighter with "Firefighters of Wyoming." Officials checked with the Better Business Bureau, the Wyoming State Fire Marshal's Office and local fire departments and don't believe such an organization exists, according to a news release from the Natrona County Fire District.

On a phone equipped with caller ID, the person soliciting donations will come up as a private caller.

Officials found out about the scam last night, said county fire district Inspector Mike Lindahl. He is not sure how many people have received the calls so far.

Fund drives for burns victims have been held in Natrona County, but those were designed for a specific person.
