Driver James Stark of Hot Springs, Ark., pulled the vehicle over while eastbound on U.S. Highway 16 after noticing that the brakes were hot, according to the patrol. Despite letting the brakes cool, the Starks found that they had no braking on the motor home once continuing eastbound.
The right front of the motor home clipped the left rear of a 1995 Ford F-350 pickup truck. The driver and passenger in the truck were uninjured.
The Highway Patrol says Stark swerved in and out of traffic to avoid collision until coming to a 'T' intersection with Main Street in downtown Buffalo. Troopers estimate the speed at approximately 50 mph as the motor home crashed into a building on the east side of the intersection. The motor home came to rest inside the building.
James Stark, 73, died at the scene.
Passenger Saralee Stark, 68, was also injured in the runaway vehicle. She was transported to Johnson County Memorial Hospital in Buffalo and has since been transferred to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.
