GILLETTE - The Gillette Camels didn't waste any time - they started setting state records and swimming all-America times in the preliminaries.

As a result, the Camels are in great shape to win their fourth consecutive Class 4A championship at the Wyoming State High School Girls Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Camels qualified 23 individuals and relays for today's championship races, which start at 11 a.m. at the Campbell County Aquatic Center. Six more swimmers qualified for the consolation finals.

Cheyenne Central had the second-most qualifiers for today, with 12 in the championship races and six more in the consolation races for 18 total.

The preliminary rounds of diving were not complete by the Star-Tribune's early press deadline.

Gillette freshman Shaya Schaedler swam two times worthy of all-America consideration, taking home first place in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle (24.05 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (57.94).

Teammate T.J. Padova swam an all-America consideration time in the 200 freestyle with her mark of 1 minute, 52.36 seconds, and also broke the Class 4A state meet record in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:10.57.

Padova's 500 freestyle time broke a record set by Laramie's Heather Moore in 2002 by nearly two full seconds.

Gillette's Meghan Swirzcki added the top qualifying time in the 200 individual medley.

Cheyenne East and Green River each had 15 qualifiers for today's races, with nine apiece in the finals. East's Taylor O'Holleran was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly and teammate Morgan Hartigan swam the best preliminary time in the 100 breaststroke.

Central's Brenna Day had the top qualifying time in the 100 freestyle as the Indians also qualified with the best team marks in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
