CHEYENNE - A new report says the University of Wyoming doesn't require future elementary school teachers to take enough coursework to teach math.
The report out Friday by the National Council on Teacher Quality gave the university a failing mark for its preparation of elementary math teachers.
The council says the UW College of Education would have passed had it required more math courses for prospective elementary teachers. The council also criticizes the state for weak requirements.
Kay Persichitte (per-sih-KIT'-ee) directs teacher education at the College of Education. She says she's disappointed and surprised that UW didn't get a passing mark.
She says she's puzzled at the method the council uses to count courses.
