GILLETTE - As expected, the Gillette Camels won the Class 4A state girls swimming title for the fourth year in a row.

But Friday's final round of the Wyoming State High School Swimming and Diving Championships wasn't just about the Camels - although the host team capped another stellar season with an amazing weekend.

In all, five state meet records were broken - four by the Camels - and three automatic all-America times and five more all-America consideration times were set.

"The top-end swims were really fast," Gillette coach Phil Rehard said via telephone on Friday. " … Just having the competition made them all swim faster. There were some extremely fast times this weekend."

Gillette senior T.J. Padova left her fingerprints all over the state meet record book. She set a new state record in the 200 freestyle of 1:51.68, a mark good enough for all-America consideration, and then broke the 500 freestyle record she set in Thursday's preliminaries with a time of 5:09.53.

She was also a part of two state meet relay records, as the Camels broke through with record times in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

The 200 medley relay time of 1:47.97 is good enough for automatic all-America status; the 400 freestyle relay's winning time of 3:36.40 is good enough for all-America consideration.

Rehard said Padova's 200 freestyle record was unexpected - the old record, set in 2004, was notched by former Kelly Walsh and current Texas A&M swimmer Kristen Heiss.

"That was a huge record for T.J. to get (Friday) and I was surprised she got it," Rehard said. "It was an extremely fast time, but she went out there and got it."

Padova capped her high school career with five individual state championships, including at least one in all four individual freestyle events (50, 100, 200 and 500).

Freshman teammate Shaya Schaedler won two individual events, as well. She won the 50 freestyle in 24.02 seconds, good enough for all-America consideration, then swam the 100 backstroke in 57.48 seconds, a mark good enough for automatic all-America recognition.

"Shaya's 100 back was an extremely fast time, especially for a freshman," Rehard said. " … For us to get a 14-year-old freshman national qualifier, that was a huge, huge race for her."

In addition, Gillette senior Sasha Andrie won the diving championship.

Runner-up Cheyenne Central also had three event champions, as Taylor O'Holleran won the 100 butterfly and Brenna Day won the 100 freestyle. Central also won the 200 freestyle relay.

Cheyenne East's Morgan Hartigan also earned a Class 4A state meet record and automatic all-America recognition with her first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:04.34 broke the oldest existing state meet record, set by Laramie's Tami McCullough in 1982, and earned her an automatic all-America spot by topping the qualifying standard by nearly a full second.

East also earned an all-America consideration time by finishing second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.67. Also, East senior Jenna Wisdorf won the 200 individual medley for the second time in her high school career, finishing with four total individual state championships.

"It was a good day for Wyoming swimming as far as seeing some records being broke," Rehard said.
