GILLETTE - With nearly identical numbers of qualifiers, the Jackson Broncs needed a big day on Saturday.

The Broncs responded to the challenge.

For the second time in a row - and for the fourth time in five years - Jackson claimed the team title at the Class 3A Wyoming State High School Girls Swimming and Diving Championships in Gillette.

Even though Jackson and Lander qualified the same number of individual swimmers into the championship and consolation races, the Broncs pulled away in the finals by winning eight of the 12 events.

The Broncs finished with 319 points to Lander's 244.

Jackson's Rene Woodmencey, who was named athlete of the meet and the 3A swimmer of the year, won both the 100 and 200 freestyle, winning both events for the second consecutive year.

Teammate Maddy Wigg won the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley and Amanda Fay won the diving championship. Jackson also won all three relays.

Buffalo's Summer Bell won the 100 butterfly championship, her second consecutive first-place finish at state in that event and her fifth overall individual state championship. She won the 500 freestyle as a freshman and a sophomore and also won the 200 individual medley as a junior; she was second in the 200 IM on Saturday.

Cody's Betsey Whisonant added a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke, while Sublette County freshman Michelle Fenn won the 100 breaststroke title.
