CHEYENNE - An annual national report on the well-being of children shows some youngsters escaped poverty during Wyoming's energy boom but more teenage girls had babies.
Wyoming ranked 32nd overall in the annual Kids Count report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
Wyoming ranked seventh among the 50 states for its relatively low number of children living in poverty. The portion of Wyoming children in poverty decreased 20 percent between 2000 and 2007.
Meanwhile, the birth rate for Wyoming girls ages 15 to 19 increased 12 percent between 2000 and 2006.
Wyoming Kids Count Director Marc Homer says Wyoming leaders missed opportunities to use a state budget surplus to help children but they still can do things to improve youngsters' lives.
