POWELL - Health officials say an 8-year-old Powell girl has been diagnosed with meningitis, but her case was caused by a different organism than that of a Cody teen who died from the infection earlier this month.

The 8-year-old is the third Park County resident to be diagnosed with meningitis this year.

Park County health officer Dr. Charles Jamieson says the girl was diagnosed last week and is recovering well.

He says the Powell case is unrelated to two Cody teenagers who also suffered from meningitis. A 15-year-old died from the infection and a 16-year-old was hospitalized in Salt Lake City.

Jamieson says the organism that caused the 8-year-old's infection causes most childhood pneumonia, meningitis and ear infections.

Jamieson says such infections are typically prevented by a childhood vaccine called Prevnar. Health officials are investigating the child's immunization history.
