Dan Cepeda, Star-Tribune Lynne Cheney, center, prepares for an interview with CBS News correspondent Rita Braver in front of Natrona County High School on Thursday afternoon in Casper. Cheney, who met future husband and Vice President Dick Cheney while a student at NCHS, is in town promoting a new book and visiting family.
Natrona County High School students, on campus for orientation, passed by Secret Service agents guarding Lynne Cheney, who spoke about going to class there, about growing up in Casper.
Her early years are the subject of her latest book, a memoir that focusses on her Wyoming roots, intertwined with stories of her ancestors and those of her husband, Vice President Dick Cheney.
"Blue Skies, No Fences" references Casper often, as she grew up here, and will include images of the city in the 1940s and '50s and the author in her youth, as well as stories culled from local sources. An accompanying feature on CBS News Sunday Morning, which was taped Thursday, will highlight some of those stories, and give a national audience a glimpse at the Casper Cheney recalls in her memoir.
Correspondent Rita Braver interviewed Cheney Thursday at several Casper locations relevant to the book. The day began at the Rialto Theatre and continued to the Izaak Walton League Cabin, NCHS and two of her childhood homes. The session ended with a trip to the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo grounds, where she talked about her baton twirling capabilities that won her two state titles, Cheney's press secretary Ginny Justice said.
The interview is scheduled to air on Sunday, Oct. 7, during the CBS News Sunday Morning. "Blue Skies, No Fences" will be released Oct. 9, and a possible book signing in Casper is in the process of being scheduled.
