Ryle sentencing set for October
A former Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper will be sentenced next month for unlawfully arresting a Wal-Mart truck driver as part of a plan to kill him and stage a crash.
Franklin Ryle Jr. will return to U.S. District Court in Cheyenne on Oct. 9 to be sentenced for violating the trucker's civil rights and carrying a gun during the incident.
Prosecutors are expected to ask a judge to sentence Ryle to 19 to 22 years in prison. Ryle's attorneys are free to argue for a lesser sentence.
Ryle pleaded guilty in July.
Police warn of phone scam
Police are warning residents about a phone scam that has been reported in Casper this month.
Some cell phone owners have received fraudulent phone calls warning them that their ATM card has been compromised. The caller asks for the recipient's ATM card number and pin.
Police advise residents not to give out bank card information over the phone.
County offers emergency response training
Natrona County Emergency Management has openings for its next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class.
The class begins on Sept. 24 and will be held on Thursday evenings for nine weeks. The session also includes three Saturday classes.
Students will be instructed on hazards that occur in Natrona County. They will also be taught how to prepare and respond to a disaster.

CY sponsors hat day
CY Junior High School's student council will sponsor a hat day on Friday, according to a media release.
Students and staff can pay $1 to wear a hat at school. All proceeds will go to the Angel Network of Natrona County, which supports individuals in the community with cancer. The student council also encourages all students and staff to wear pink that day to support the Cancer Foundation.
Airport manager receives award
During Wyoming's first statewide aviation conference, Glenn Januska, airport manager at Casper/Natrona County International Airport, received the first Airport Manager of the Year award, according to a media release.
The award was based on accomplishments at the local, state and federal levels.
Partnering for Kids plans info night
The annual Partnering for Kids information night will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Casper elementary schools, according to a media release.
Partnering for Kids is a collection of community organizations that come together to host a single information night for parents. Families can learn more about all of the member organizations and sign their kids up for activities all with one stop at their local schools.
The event begins at 6 p.m. on Sept. 22 at all Natrona County elementary schools, with the exception of Midwest and the rural schools of Alcova, Powder River, Red Creek and Willow Creek.
Organizations that will have information at the Partnering for Kids events include Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts, 4-H, Casper Family YMCA and Girl Scouts.
Library Foundation announces leadership
The Natrona County Library Foundation announced its Board leadership for 2009-10, according to a media release.
John Masterson will serve as the Foundation's board president, while Mark Zaback was elected to serve as board vice president and Ray Bader as secretary/treasurer.
Foundation Board members also include Bill Nelson, Bill Thompson, John Jorgensen, Steve Degenfelder, Linda Nix, Phil Schmidt, Jeanne Goldrick, Mary Lynne Shickich and Jimmy Goolsby.
BLM issues firewood permits
The Bureau of Land Management Casper Field Office will issue firewood and post and pole permits for the Muddy Mountain area now through Sept. 30, according to a media release.
Permits are limited to three cords per person, and will be issued on a first come, first serve basis. Permits are $16 per cord and $1 per post and pole. There is an additional $1.50 road maintenance fee per permit. Individuals must show up in person at the Casper Field Office, located at 2987 Prospector between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to purchase a permit.
