Man wandered from camp in southern Big Horns, companions say
The Natrona County Sheriff's Office continued on Monday to search for a hunter missing since about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Travis McMahan, 39, wandered from a campsite he and two fellow hunters had in the Buffalo Creek Campground area, which is roughly 35 miles north of Waltman off of Big Horn Mountain Road. The three men had gone elk hunting in the area Friday evening, according to Sgt. Mark Sellers.
"Apparently, he went out to use the restroom," Sellers said. "He never did return to the camp."
The two other hunters spent most of Saturday night searching the area for McMahan after he didn't return to the campsite. They were able to place a call to the sheriff's office at about 10:55 a.m. Sunday and report the missing man. They remain at the campsite.
A ground crew searched for McMahan on Sunday afternoon and all day Monday. Two helicopters assisted in the search Monday.
As the search's second day came to a close Monday, no new clues or leads had been found, Sellers said. He added that there is no cell phone coverage in the area where the men were hunting.
McMahan, a Casper resident, is not believed to have any food or water with him. Authorities aren't sure what type of clothing he was wearing at the time of his disappearance.
The weather forecast for the area where McMahan went missing calls for scattered snow showers today, with temperatures in the mid-30s, according to Roger Smith, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Riverton.
The temperature is expected to drop to 15 degrees tonight, with the wind chill dropping below zero after midnight.
"The main thing that would be really tough up there would be the north winds," Smith said. "Those are pretty tough winds."
