Students help decorate cemetery

Students from Dean Morgan Junior High will help decorate Veterans Cemetery at 9 a.m. today for Memorial Day.

The group will then proceed to Highland Cemetery and help the American Legion Auxiliary decorate the old portion of the cemetery with flags and poppies.

Students will also be placing poppy sprays, furnished by the American Legion Auxiliary, on those graves.

Daniels Fund announces grants to nonprofits

The Daniels Fund board approved $732,642 in grants to Wyoming nonprofits and elected two new board members during its second quarter meeting this week.

Grant recipients include: Central Wyoming Rescue Mission, Casper; Mother Seton Housing of Casper; Albany County Ark Regional Services; Boys & Girls Club of Washakie County; Bright Futures Mentoring Program, Cody; Diversified Services Day Habilitation & Vocational Training Center, Torrington; Douglas Senior Citizens; Dubois Youth After-School Activities; Lander Care & Share Food Bank; St. Joseph's Children's Home, Torrington; Shoshoni Senior Citizens Center; Uinta County Community After-School and Summer Youth Program; Wamsutter Community After-School Youth Program; Ten Sleep After School and Summer Youth Program; Wyoming Jumpstart Coalition for Financial Literacy; and YMCA of Sweetwater County Summer Program.

Tony Acone, a cable television executive, and Jim Griesemer, professor and dean emeritus at the University of Denver's Daniels College of Business, were elected to the board of directors. John Saeman, founding board member and former chairman, concluded his term and chose not seek re-election.

The Daniels Fund will award a projected $38 million in grants and $12 million in college scholarships, totaling an estimated $50 million in funding this year. The program areas eligible for grants through the Daniels Fund fall under the categories of: aging, alcoholism and substance abuse, amateur sports, disabilities, education, homeless and disadvantaged, and youth development.

Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television who launched his first system in Casper, established the Daniels Fund to operate the Daniels Fund Scholarship Program and the Daniels Fund Grants Program in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, as well as funding programs with a national impact.

Dog show bring money to town

An estimated $150,000 will be spent in Casper during the Central Wyoming Kennel Club dog show and obedience trials, which began Friday and conclude today, according to a release from the event's organizers.

A recent study by the American Kennel Club shows that, on average, a dog-show participant will spend $75 per day per person at a show. The two-day show in Casper typically attracts approximately 1,000 exhibitors.

More than 600 dogs representing more than 90 breeds will be at the annual show. Today's competition begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Central Wyoming Fairgrounds Arena, and Best in Show is selected by mid-afternoon today.

The show is open to the public. According to American Kennel Club regulations, only dogs that are being shown are admitted into the show area.
