A Casper man faces up to 22 years in prison after police say he tried to stab another man on Thursday morning.

Sloan Sedley Selwyn, 26, is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and reckless endangerment.

Selwyn threatened to stab and kill a man he lives with after the man tried to use the telephone in their home on the 1500 block of East A Street, Casper Police Detective Robin Tuma wrote in a statement.

Around 8 a.m., the man was sitting in his bedroom with his 1-year-old son on his lap when Selwyn, formerly of Yankton, S.D., threw a cup of coffee on him. Selwyn then went into the kitchen and returned slashing a wooden-handled knife with a 10-inch blade, Tuma wrote.

Selwyn told the other man he was going to kill him. The man reportedly ducked several times while holding his son to avoid being hit by Selwyn.

He escaped the bedroom and tried to leave through the front door but it was locked, Tuma wrote. The man then ran toward the back door to leave. Selwyn stood in the doorway slashing at the man with his knife.

The man's wife tried to intervene and Selwyn slashed the knife above her head toward the man while she was holding her son.

The man then went back to the front door, unlocked it and tried to leave. Selwyn grabbed his jacket and slashed toward him. The man wriggled out of his jacket, Tuma wrote, fled across the street and called the police.

Selwyn, who's been in Casper for three or four months, told police he had the knife to protect himself from the other man, Tuma wrote.

South Dakota police arrested Selwyn on Nov. 20 for aggravated assault and simple assault. The prosecutor said the prior assault was also with a knife.

The prosecutor asked Natrona County Circuit Court Judge Michael Patchen to set bond at $30,000.

Patchen set bail at $50,000, citing Selwyn's lack of attachment to the Casper community and prior assault.
