A tanker truck collided with a car near the intersection of CY Avenue and Robertson Road just before noon Friday, snarling traffic while authorities worked to contain an estimated 2,000 gallons of leaking heavy motor oil.

Emergency crews were able to contain the leak before it reached the nearby North Platte River or storm sewers, said Casper Fire-EMS spokesman Justin Smith. Crews worked to clean the road in anticipation of a storm expected to reach Casper on Friday night, which had the potential to wash oil into the river.

The crash injured three people, who were transported to Wyoming Medical Center. An update on their conditions was not immediately available.

The crash occurred at 11:46 a.m. when a tanker truck transporting about 10,000 gallons of 15/40 motor oil collided with a Pontiac Grand Am. The tanker overturned and its contents began to leak, as did diesel fuel from the truck's saddle tanks, according to Smith.

The Grand Am came to rest on the north side of CY Avenue and sustained major front-end damage.

Smith said he didn't know the cause of the accident.

Before the crash could be cleared, crews had to off-load the remaining motor oil and right the tanker. Vacuum trucks and earth moving equipment were used to collect the oil.

No one in the neighborhood was evacuated because of the spill, but a nearby storage business sustained some damage, Smith said.

The crash caused traffic to back up at the intersection. Smith expected traffic would be restricted into the evening, as cleanup efforts continued.

Representatives of more than 25 public agencies and private companies assisted with the crash. The company that owned the truck coordinated the cleanup.
