Weekend roundup: Run, shop, cheer, laugh

A race with canned food as an entry fee; a homespun craft fair; the "Brawl of the Wild," pitting folks from the north against one another and a hilarious family comedy all are on tap this weekend.

The Casper Windy City Striders will host a 5K and 10K Turkey Trot run, starting at the new Tate Pumphouse Trail Center on West Yellowstone. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the races start at 9 a.m. Entry fee for the 5 K is two cans of food or other nonperishable food product; entry fee for the 10K is four cans of food or other nonperishable food products. All food will be donated to a local food bank.

 Mount Hope Lutheran Church and School will be having its Annual Craft Fair from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no entrance fee, and all proceeds benefit the Mount Hope Lutheran School Tuition Assistance Fund. Crafts of all kinds will be available, as well as  the Mount Hope Lutheran School Cookbook for $10.

The Natrona County Make It With Wool contest starts at 9 a.m., at the ARLC Building, 2011 Fairgrounds Rd.

The contest categories are preteen, junior, senior adult, made for others, accessories, and a new category -- wool crafts. A quilt contest will be held during the state Make It With Wool contest in December.

Free breast exams and prostate screenings will be done by Dr. Diane Henshaw and Dr. John Purviance from 10 a.m. to noon at Rocky Mountain Oncology, 6501 E. Second St. There will not be the annual health expo in April 2010, so don't miss out on the screenings.

Children 8 to 12 will be able to create their own structural design using materials that architects use during a Young Builders Workshop at the Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center. The workshop, which is free, is being presented by GSG Architecture and Lynn Sedar.

The workshop from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., has a space limit of 12 children, so early registration is encouraged.

Brawl of the Wild, the 109th meeting of the University of Montana Grizzlies and the Montana State Bobcats takes place at 12:05 p.m. Join alumni from both sides of the fierce "Brawl of the Wild" at Sidelines Bar & Grill and cheer your team to the victory and bragging rights.

The Historic Bishop Home, 818 E. Second St., will open its doors for the poplar Holiday Teas today and Sunday. Teas are today and Sunday at 2 p.m. Sunday is the “Teddy Bear” Tea that returns by request to entertain our “wee” friends.  All Bears and their escorts are welcome. Cost is $25 per person and includes a $10 tax-deductible donation to the home's owner, Cadoma Foundation.

The Casper Youth Orchestra (CYO) presents "Afternoon of Classics," at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Kelly Walsh High School. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door.  

Twelve Days of Christmas, a Casper holiday tradition for 27 years, is open daily through December 23 at Sunrise Shopping Center (north end next to the fitness center). Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday; Sunday noon to 4 p.m.

"Sister’s Christmas Catechism, The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold," an off-Broadway production from New York plays at the NCHS auditorium at 7:30 p.m. "Sister’s Christmas Catechism," with hysterical audience interaction, musical highlights, wacky prizes, nonstop laughs and the irrepressible, irresistible Sister, is bound to be a highlight of your holiday season whether you are Catholic or not. Tickets are $35. On Sunday, both the Eagles and Elks offer breakfast to the public from 8 to 11 a.m. The special at the Eagles is stuffed french toast.

The Eagles charity is the Abused Children's Fund named for Jimmy Durante. The Elks charity is the Elks National Foundation.

Also on Sunday, St. Anthony Tri-Parish School hosts a Fall Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. for families interested in preschool through ninth grades. Scholarships are available to anyone who qualifies through an application process. Teachers, staff and parents will be available to talk to and answer any questions.

PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at United Christian Church, 15th and Melrose. A video, "Holding Families Together," a story of three families and their response to the news that their children are gay, will be shown. All lesbians and gays and straight allies are welcome.
