Star-Tribune staff reports

Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers arrested a wanted man following a brief high-speed chase on southbound Interstate 25 Tuesday morning, according to Sgt. Steve Townsend of WHP.

A trooper attempted to pull over Brian F. Cook, 34, for driving 85 mph in a 75 mph zone. Instead of stopping his 1992 Eagle Talon, Cook sped up significantly.

At the time it was unknown that Cook was wanted on a national warrant out of Florida for dangerous drug possession, according to Townsend. The trooper attempting to make the traffic stop clocked Cook on his radar gun, which registered a reading of 130 mph. The pursuit began on I-25, about 29 miles south of Casper, according to Townsend.

Additional WHP units set up spikes strips across the Interstate three times, causing three of the Talon's tires to go flat. Depending on how tires hit the spikes, it might take multiple attempts to disable a vehicle, according to Townsend.

"It is just the luck of the draw," he said.

Cook was pulled over at the Wardell Road offramp and surrendered without incident, according to Townsend. The chase lasted 16 minutes.

When contacted by the Wyoming Highway Patrol the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department advised that they would not seek extradition of Cook back to Florida.

"For whatever reason, Florida will not come after him here," Townsend said.

Cook currently remains in custody at the Natrona County Detention Center in Casper, and faces local charges of driving with a suspended driver's license, driving under the influence, speeding and eluding.
