Volunteers, a local business and a national nonprofit organization will combine forces Thursday to build a playground in one day for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming.

The Home Depot and the nonprofit KaBOOM! have combined on a national project to create or refurbish 1,000 play spaces in 1,000 days.

The local project, which will result in the construction of a state-of-the-art, 2,500-square-foot playground for the Boys & Girls Clubs at 1701 E. K Street, is being funded by a $47,200 grant from The Home Depot and a $9,000 Casper Community Development Block Grant.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. with a breakfast for all volunteers. Work will continue until 3 p.m., with entertainment and raffles throughout the day.

Over the past 35 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming have helped an estimated 26,000 young people. The facility in North Casper serves 550 members daily, but it also opens its doors to local school groups, day-care centers, home-schooled children and other organizations. In the course of the year the facility serves more than 5,500 children.

Volunteers from both Rotary Clubs, the Wyoming Medical Center, Target, Wal-Mart, American National Bank, First Interstate Bank and the Natrona County School District have agreed to donate their time. The City of Casper is offering staff expertise and equipment, with at least five staff members serving as build captains.

BioLife Plasma Services has adopted the club and is also sending 25 volunteers.

Food for the event has been donated by Blimpie, Burger King, La Cocina, First Street Bakers, and P. Hawk-Coffee Roaster.

Other donations for the project include tents from Kistler Tent and Awning, rest rooms from R & R Rest Stops, and a dumpster from Waste Connections.
