The Wyoming Department of Transportation installed new wind warning signs and wind socks at the east and west entrances to Wyoming Boulevard in response to recent wind-related accidents on the highway.
Three recent accidents involving vehicles blown over by high winds doubled the number of similar accidents in the last five years and one resulted in the death of an out-of-state truck driver.
"Too many people, from truckers to those in four-wheel drives and vans think that 'their' vehicle is capable of handling hazardous driving conditions when other's aren't," said Susan Sherwood, WYDOT public involvement officer.
WYDOT also plans to add advisory signs at each end of the road while drivers still have the option to take another route.
The department is also working on adding an advisory radio channel within a month. In the long term, WYDOT will also add electronic message signs and construction on the West Casper Belt Loop is scheduled to begin next year.
