The doors will be locked inside, but the outdoor Wednesday Night Live! concert is a go from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., tonight just behind the Nicolaysen Art Museum.
"It's right here," said Nic communications director Clay Anthony, as he stood on the dry and clean patio in the museum's back courtyard.
On Friday night, water from the microburst that caused flash flooding throughout Casper completely swamped the grassy yard and was standing more than a foot up the sienna concrete fence that surrounds the Kimball Street side of the museum.
Tonight's opening Wednesday Night Live! of the season features local musicians Dan & Cliffy, an acoustic guitar duo who play songs folks actually know from the 1950's, 60's and 70's in a family friendly way.
Food vendors and a cash bar are available. Folks are welcome to take lawn chairs and enjoy the first in a series of eight live Wednesday night concerts.
Inside, the Nic's floors are making great progress, but the museum remains closed at least through today.
Belfor Property Restoration National Disaster Team is here from Denver with enormous dryers and dehumidifiers, drying nearly all of the ground-level flooring that was wet.
"The water just came in under every door in a rush," Anthony said. "Not one drop came in through the roof."
The hardwood floor in the lobby is only 18 months old, and although Anthony suspects it will need refinishing at some point, it remains in good condition.
Many of the life-sized buffalo who returned for a reunion during Nic Fest just two weeks ago were still in the lobby.
"A few buffalo got their feet wet, but none were damaged, and none of our other collections were either," Anthony said. "All in all, it could have been much worse."
The museum did lose lots of particle board pedestals used to set three-dimensional works on, as well as cardboard boxes full of exhibit catalogs in the storage room.
"It was 10 inches deep inside the loading dock area and 2 inches deep in the prep room," said museum registrar Ingrid Burnett. "But it did not go into the collections room because that door has a special seal. We got very lucky."
City crews were busy Monday on the grounds of the Nic, sweeping mud and shoveling mulch and other debris dislodged from surrounding landscaping. Now, short of a little bit of still-drying mud in low spots, the outdoor grounds are ready for an outdoor concert.
"We hope to open Thursday," Anthony said. "They think they'll be able to start pulling fans and dehumidifiers late Wednesday (today). Hopefully, if all goes well, we'll be open Thursday morning."
