Some Casper residents will hold a vigil to mark the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq at noon Wednesday.
"Participants are asked to stand in solidarity with the families of the nearly 4,000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have died, the unknown numbers of both who are wounded in body and mind, and the more than 4 million Iraqis who are displaced from their homes," according to an e-mail from Roxie Monterastelli.
The vigil will be from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday on the sidewalk in front of the Natrona County Courthouse, 200 N. Center St.
No single group is organizing the vigil, Monterastelli said. "We've never done this before."
Some of the participants are in branches of JustFaith Ministries, she said. JustFaith offers workshops and programs that empower people and expand their commitment to social ministry within faith communities, according to the Web site JustFaith.org. JustFaith is a joint venture of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Charities USA, Catholic Relief Services, and Bread for the World.
The vigil is not about undermining support for the troops, Monterastelli said. "I wouldn't want to hurt anyone who's in the military."
