The city of Casper may have plastics recycling and Meals on Wheels may soon see a new solar power project.

For $111,872, city officials would purchase two bins for each of the eight community recycling depots as well as two sanitary compactors, two vans for storage and transport, staffing overtime and other initial costs.

City staff members will recommend to council that there be two bins, one for plastics No. 1 through No. 7 and another for only No. 2 milk jugs, according to a memo from Solid Waste Division Manager Cynthia Langston.

Each of the bins would be carefully marked with pictures of the common plastics to help people adjust to the new service.

City staff members will also implement a six-month education campaign from the start of recycling in July, should the Casper City Council decide fund the project.

The council will also hear about a proposal to build solar panels near Meals on Wheels to help power the nonprofit. Since Meals on Wheels uses a building leased from the city, any changes such as these require approval from the council.

There would be 60 panels that would be 103 feet long and ten feet high and a small, decorative wall at the base of the structure to protect it from vehicles, according to a memo from Community Development Director April Getchius.

The council will also hear a proposal from the Leisure Services Advisory Board to consider raising rates at the Casper Family Aquatics Center from $5 for daily admission to $5.50. The proposal also discusses raising daily admission to the Paradise Valley pool from $4 to $4.50.
