To say the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps had a successful weekend in the Rockies would be similar to saying Wyoming has had a little rain lately.
Beginning in Ogden, Utah, last Wednesday and continuing through Cheyenne's free show on Sunday night, the Troopers were greeted with huge, enthusiastic "home field" crowds at each venue.
In Ogden, fans included a western Wyoming contingent taking advantage of the close proximity.
Both at the smaller Windsor, Colo., venue and at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver, the loud and rowdy crowd clearly favored the Troopers and the hometown Blue Knights.
And in Cheyenne, Gov. Dave and First Lady Nancy Freudenthal, along with state auditor Rita Meyer, were in attendance. The governor was presented a Chris Navarro bronze of former Troopers drum major John Masterson. The presentation was made to the governor by Masterson and this year's drum major, Corey Moore.
The generous full house at Cheyenne East High School contributed $1,400 to the Food and Fuel Fund, according to development director Jamie Purcell.
On Saturday in Denver, seated amongst old Cavaliers (Rosemont, Ill.), and lots of Blue Knights fans in Section 508 at Invesco, it was interesting to see and hear the reaction to the Troopers.
With the modernization of so many corps' shows (including pink and blue mattresses and white folding chairs), this year's Troopers program hits all the right themes, blending sensational music from "West Side Story," with the trademark Western flair that has branded the Troopers as "America's Corps," for more than 50 years.
In their 11th Ohio Cavalry uniforms with crossed sabers, they are a visual sight to behold.
When the drum majors return to the field to accept the judges' scoring at the end of the performance, unless the Troopers are the final corps to march, there's a good chance Troopers drum major Moore may just get run over before the season concludes.
Drum majors enter from the end of the field, turn on the 50 and march to the sideline. In Moore's case, he follows every Trooper drum major before him and marches with a slow, precise military cadence.
And in Denver, the seven drum major groups behind him were all bunched up and nearly ran him down.
One would think by now they'd know that Moore is not going to hurry up.
As their scores climb and the Troopers hit the toughest part of their tour schedule, all sights are set on the World Championships in Indianapolis the first week of August.
This week, the Troopers compete seven times in seven days. They began Monday night in Hutchinson, Kan., and will compete twice in Oklahoma before Texas shows in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Denton.
Their next day off from competition is Monday.
With fuel bills running $1,000 a day and groceries expected to cost an additional $25,000 over the next four weeks, any size contribution to the Food and Fuel Fund would be appreciated. Contributions may be made to: Food and Fuel Fund, 1801 E. "E" St., Casper, 82601.
