If you like walking, the U.S. Census Bureau may have a job for you.
Workers will soon begin canvassing neighborhoods in Casper to verify addresses, Michael Crummet, manager of the Billings Census Bureau Early Local Census Office, said.
Getting records updated will precede the full-blown Census, which begins in 2010.
"Even those people under bridges, living in group quarters like penitentiaries, military bases and dormitories. We're going to cover every single person," he said.
The initial effort is expected to last two or three months, with more to follow.
Enumerators will be paid $13 an hour to begin, with crew leaders and field operations supervisors earning more. There is also a mileage reimbursement.
A Census Bureau Job Fair will be held Saturday in Casper at the LifeSteps Campus, 1514 E. 12th St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Applicants are required to take an employment test and complete an application, which could take about two hours.
Applicants must also bring two forms of identification, such as an original Social Security card and a valid driver's license.
The Census Bureau will be hiring people both part time and full time for jobs with flexible schedules.
Census job fairs also will be held Jan. 17 in Gillette and Jan. 24 in Sheridan.
Between February and March 2010, the Census Bureau will mail or deliver questionnaires to households in the U.S.
By law, population counts must be sent to the president in December 2010 for apportionment purposes and redistricting data must be delivered to the states by March 2011.
