Find a friend and have some fun at Girlfriends Unlimited

You go, girlfriend

The way Debbie Coates sees it, not every woman has a buddy to go shopping with or to the movies, to talk with about breakups and the latest in makeup.

Not every woman has a child in school.

Not every woman works with other women.

But every woman needs a girlfriend.

"The whole idea is to reach out to women who just can't connect with another woman. There are women who are lonely and for some, it's just hard to connect," Coates said.

Tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Holiday Inn on the River, Coates and a group of her girlfriends are hosting the first Girlfriends Unlimited event in the area. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m.

All women - from 18 to "108," according to publicity, are invited for an evening of fun and friendship.

Cost is $15 per person but if you take a friend, she gets in for $5. The event is one where women should feel perfectly comfortable arriving by themselves, Coates said.

Girlfriends Unlimited was founded by two women in Mesa, Ariz., in 2004, after each had suffered the loss of her mother.

According to its Web site, girlfriendsunlimited.com, before tonight there had been no active groups in Wyoming.

The group's mission is to "passionately and purposefully provide life-enhancing places and innovative experiences for women to connect," according to the Web site.

Once in the door tonight, the pampering is included in the admission price.

Women will have their choice of one of a number of pampering services, including massage, manicure, eyebrow waxing and "digital hair," where a stylist projects your face on a computer screen to see how different hairstyles might look.

There will be lots of vendors and home parties represented as well, according to Coates.

Those attending will have the option to play group games, learn how to make a beaded bracelet and listen to live music and enjoy refreshments.

Casper organizers plan two big events every six months, with the next one set for May.

In between, women may choose to gather every six weeks with new friends for "clubbing nights" and enjoy activities like bowling or stitching or taking in a movie and then discussing it.

Although Coates and the organizers for tonight's event go to the same church, she says there will be no Scripture or religious themes to the event.
