Managing growth and keeping the public better informed are among key issues raised by candidates in the Mills Town Council race.

Voters will pick two candidates from a field of four to serve four-year terms on the council.

Incumbent Rosalie Coleman said she is generally satisfied with the work of the town government in addressing growth-related issues.

A grocery store, a large restaurant and perhaps a clothing store could be good additions to the community, she added, and the council can help create an environment to make that happen.

"Mainly, I would just like to see that we're a safe community, that we are developing the things we need," she said.

Ed Greenwood would like to see each town department formulate long-range plans so the town is not surprised by emerging needs.

"The people that are working the streets day to day know more about what's actually needed than even the engineers do," he said.

He said there will be a lot of maintenance work that needs to be done.

Greenwood favors developing a town Web site to post news about town meetings and activities.

He would like to see the vicinity of Burd Road annexed so the town will have the tax base from that industrial area.

Elsie Herbort is an advocate for a general clean-up of Mills, such as removing junk and abandoned trailers. She said it's an issue she will work on regardless of the election outcome.

Herbort wants to keep the public better informed about the town council's proposals and actions.

"At this point, the public isn't informed until after the fact," she said. "That really, really concerns me."

She suggested a town newsletter that goes out occasionally could be increased in frequency to keep the public better informed.

Scott Cotton also is on the ballot for a seat on the town council.
