Members of opposing motorcycle groups brawled in a downtown alley Saturday afternoon, resulting in three minor injuries, according to police and eyewitness accounts.

While details were sketchy, the melee involved members of the OutDwellers Motorcycle Club and the Vietnam Veterans and Legacy Veterans motorcycle clubs in the alley between Center and David Streets about 3:30 p.m.

According to Pat Sweeney, the owner of the Wonder Bar and the Parkway Plaza Hotel, a group of about 20 OutDwellers had planned to come to the Wonder Bar on a "poker run," where the group goes to five locations and gets a playing card at each stop.

The Vietnam Vets and Legacy Vets are having their annual fundraiser and raffle at the hotel, and Sweeney expected between 800 and 1,000 people to attend, including about 400 veterans.

Sweeney said the confrontation between the two groups apparently started in the bar and then quickly moved outside. A member of the OutDwellers apparently sprayed the Vets with mace, Sweeney said, though police spokesman Glen Gilmore could not confirm that Saturday night. There was an empty can of mace in the alley dumpster.

Eyewitnesses said Casper Police, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Casper Fire Department and at least one ambulance were on the scene almost immediately and blocked off access to the alley and an adjoining parking lot.

Metro Coffee Company owner Mac Mayfield reported seeing a police K-9 unit.

Downtown businessman Jim Wolford walked from his shop on Second Street to the alley and said "there were cops coming from every direction."

Wolford also reported "a lot of those guys coming around the back of the building with bloody noses and bloody knuckles" and police carrying shotguns. Police did not say how many people were arrested.

About an hour after the fight there were several spots marked by dried blood in the alley.

Sweeney said he cleared the bar of anybody wearing "colors" and he also put his security staff at the hotel on alert for the OutDwellers.

"We knew that the OutDwellers had booked this at the Wonder Bar, but we didn't anticipate … the bad feelings there were between the Vietnam vets and the OutDwellers," Sweeney said. He added he had never had any problems with the Vietnam vets.

The leader of the OutDwellers, John Bert Eldredge, had no comment when called at his home. The Vietnam Vets also had no comment.
