Getting angry about federal income taxes won't get you through the agony any faster than staying calm.

Anger, or whatever other emotions you may have, may even hinder your ability to correctly calculate and file your tax forms.

So here are a few suggestions to ease the pain:

* Gather your records in advance including W-2 and 1099 forms. Don't forget to save copies for your files.

* Get the right forms. They are available on the Internal Revenue Service Web site irs.gov.

* Take your time. Take breaks. Rushing can lead to mistakes.

* Double-check your math. Verify all Social Security numbers. Don't forget your signature.

* Get faster refunds by filing earlier. Also use the direct deposit feature instead of waiting for a check in the mail.

* File electronically. E-filing catches math problems, provides confirmation that your return has been received, and results in a faster refund.

* Don't panic if you can't pay. If you can't immediately pay the taxes you owe, apply for an IRS installment agreement for monthly payments, or consider paying by credit card.

* Request an extension of time to file, but still pay on time. The six month extension ends on Oct. 16.

* Don't panic. Again, consult the IRS Web site, or call the IRS customer service number at (800) 829-1040.
