Don't worry, it will still be red.
The Casper Events Center needs a new roof, but city officials say the landmark color won't change.
Public Services Director Gary Clough said only the top, flat part of the roof will be replaced, with minor repairs to the red metal siding.
"It's the normal wear and tear for the age that it is," Clough said. "There are minor leaks, and it's clear we have to do this before we have major issues."
The Casper City Council recently approved a request to hire GSG Architecture to design the new roof.
The flat section is currently made of gravel, which doesn't survive Wyoming winters as long as other materiels, and requires more maintenance. The new section will be a membrane material, which Clough hopes will last longer.
Events Center Building Manager Bud Dovala said when it rains or snows, staff members are forced to cover sections of chairs and close areas of the building until the leaking stops.
It's the original roof, Clough said, and he hopes to have it replaced before the upcoming winter snow storms. The council budgeted $500,000 for the work.
In other city news, the council passed the first of three needed approvals to update handicapped parking codes.
The changes, which include further defining the number of spaces required and adding "van-accessible" spots, won't affect current business owners, said Community Development Director April Getchius.
"It's taking our existing ordinance and making sure it applies to the ADA," she said, referring to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
