Out of the many ways to ring in a new year, a DUI is arguably one of the most expensive and unpleasant options.

Instead of waking up late in your bed, promising you will never drink again and spending Jan. 1 writing resolutions, the holiday could mean you waking up behind bars, your friend, spouse or parent, collecting you at jail and you, spending the day figuring out how to pay the $750 fine.

But spending the wee hours of Tuesday morning sobering up in the slammer doesn't have to be a forgone conclusion, and the Casper Young Professionals Network is working on ways to keep you safe and happy.

The group is hosting a 1920s-themed party at the Holiday Inn on the River and has arranged deals with the hotel to keep you in a room and out of your car.

"We are doing a New Year's Eve party and our whole goal is to prevent drinking and driving," said Danielle Armstrong, the event's organizer. "We know people will drink and have fun, but we don't want them driving."

There are several packages from the hotel that include meals, a room and access to the party in Drake's Pub. For $149, a family of four can eat dinner and breakfast in the hotel, stay the night in a room and have free child care throughout the evening. For $129, two people get a room and both meals.

For those who don't want dinner but could use a place to stay, you can rent a room for $49. If you don't stay in the hotel, there is a $10 cover charge to attend the party, and Armstrong said if you must leave at the end, the hotel will have shuttle vans as well as taxis to take you home.

It's the first time the Holiday Inn has partnered with the young professionals, and the hotel's director of sales, Karin East, said she is excited about the possibilities of this party.

"This hotel doesn't do that well around New Year's, and when they contacted us I said that was a great idea," East said. "We weren't planning on doing anything anyway and so we jumped on the bandwagon."

Before Christmas, the hotel presold more than 30 packages and East said she expected many more as New Year's drew closer.

"We would really like to sell out," East said, leaving 160 rooms up for grabs.

The Central Wyoming Hospice Center will also host a 1920s-themed New Year's party as a fundraiser for the center's expansion.

The event begins at 7 p.m., with dinner served at 8 p.m. There will be a live band, silent auction and "hush money."

All money raised will be eligible for a 50 percent match by the McMurry Foundation. Tickets are $60 each or $100 for a couple.
