They're judged based on a standard of beauty.

The judge knows exactly what she's looking for - straight teeth, eyes set the right amount apart, body movement and a steady gait.

One by one, they parade in a circle, heads held high, big grins on their faces.

This beauty pageant welcomes members of both genders - and all registered breeds.

It's a "beauty pageant for dogs," said dog trainer Pam Dunn. Dunn works with children and adults alike on training and showing their pups.

The dogs practice and play together every Tuesday at 6 p.m., year-round.

Dunn also teaches showmanship classes, during which students ages 9 to 18 learn to show dogs. They're currently training for the junior showmanship competition in the upcoming Central Wyoming Kennel Club show in Casper.

The dog show will be held on May 22 and 23 in the Arena building at the Central Wyoming Fairgrounds. It will bring between 600 and 1,000 AKC-registered dogs to the area. Usually, about 30 or 40 exhibitors are entered in the junior showmanship competition.

"A lot move up and go on to be professionals, but most are owner-handlers," Dunn said of her students.

Bailey Rodgers, 9, is learning to show Dunn's dog Tatanka, whose AKC registered name is "Ch. Kanza's High Plans Drifter." Registered names are fairly long. Some names sound silly, and all hold unknown significance to their owners.

Take Buddy, a 2-year-old golden retriever. His registered name is "River Golden Cream Soda."

Rumor, a Doberman pincer, is actually "Botrina's Front Page News," but rumors follow him after he performs, said his handler, Mariah Henderson. A little sheltie prefers that her handler, Ben Campbell, call her Faith, although her full name is "T and C's Sure Expectations."

And then there's "Pop Pop Poppie" and "Tulie Tulip," two English bulldogs who go by Poppie and Tulip.

Savannah Housholder, 10, and her sister, Emma, 8, will show the bulldogs. Both girls - Emma especially - have a lot of promise in the world of dog shows, Dunn said.

"She'll give her friends, and her sister, a run for their money," Dunn said.
