Child dies after Alcova accident
An 11-year-old boy died on Saturday as a result of injuries sustained from a boat and personal watercraft accident.
The boy was on the personal watercraft with a man who was also transported to the Wyoming Medical Center.
Natrona County Sheriff's Sgt. Mark Sellers said the accident that happened shortly before 4 p.m. is under investigation. Whether alcohol was involved is also being investigated.
The accident between the 25-foot catamaran speed boat and Yamaha personal water craft occurred in the region of Oakie Beach.
Both the man and boy were wearing their life jackets, Sellers said, and none of the people on the boat were injured.
KW student council receives award
Kelly Walsh High School's 2007-08 student council was awarded the title of Honor Council with Meritorious Distinction by the Wyoming Association of Student Councils, according to a release from the school district.
This is the highest honor a council can receive.
NIC prepares for annual exhibit, gala
The Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center's 23rd Rocky Mountain Invitational Exhibition opens Friday in the McMurry Foundation Gallery with more that 90 works by more than 50 artists from across the region, according to a release.
The exhibition - which features painting, watercolor, basketry, sculpture, printmaking, wood turning, ceramics, pastel drawings, and more - concludes Sept. 27 when all the works will be auctioned off during the Nic's annual Dinner and Auction Gala.
The featured artists in this year's exhibition include Theodore Waddell, Tom Foolery, Matt Flint, Lynn Newman, Tom Loepp, Bill Yankee, Dick Sorenson, Barbara Kuxhausen, Linda Lillegraven and Linda Raynolds.
This year's auction event is themed "Cirque du Nicolay: An evening of Expression, Creativity, and Imagination" and is inspired by the unique circus magic and mystery of the world famous Cirque de Soleil. Guests are asked to participate in the creativity by expressing themselves in their attire as well. "Anything goes," curator Lisa Hatchadoorian said in the release.
The evening's menu features specially prepared cuisine from Armor's and a superb selection of wines from Poplar Wine & Spirits.
"This gala event is our premiere fundraiser, enabling the Nic to bring you the highest quality contemporary art exhibitions and new innovative Discovery Center classes for children," Hatchadoorian said.
"It's also a great opportunity for Casper's art lovers to add to their collections of works by contemporary artist from across the country," Executive Director Holly Turner added.
Reservations for the event, which are $150 for members or $175 for nonmembers, can be made by calling the museum at (307) 235-5247.
College offers citizenship course
A free class for individuals who are within one year of being eligible to apply for citizenship will begin on Sept. 8 at Casper College.
The free class is scheduled to run for 14 weeks from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays.
The Casper College Adult Basic Education/GED Center sponsors the free United States citizenship class.
Preregistration is required for the class, and can be done through Sept. 12 by calling (307) 268-2453.
Swim for half price on Saturday
Half-price family swim will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Casper Family Aquatic Center. Fee will be $2.50 per person. All children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult in the water. All regular facility rules apply.
