Muddy Mtn. will soon close

Muddy Mountain Road will be closed for the winter season sometime between Monday and Dec. 15, according to a release.

The road is closed annually based on weather and road conditions and will be open again around June 1.

Muddy Mountain Road is the primary access route to the Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area, two campgrounds and numerous trails. Due to mud and snow, the road is unsafe in the winter for vehicular traffic. However, the Muddy Mountain area is open for snowmobile use on designated state trails.

B.B. King returns to Casper

Blues legend B.B. King returns to Casper for another performance at 7:30 p.m. on April 11 at the Casper Events Center, according to a release. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Dec. 12.

King played at the Events Center in October 2005.

For more than half a century, Riley B. King - better known as B.B. King - has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released more than 50 albums.

College group names winners

The Casper College Alumni Association announced the winners for the Casper College Alumni Association Outstanding Student Scholarship, according to a release. One nontraditional and one traditional student were awarded a scholarship for the 2008-09 school year.

LaRon Coleman, a father in Casper, received the nontraditional scholarship worth $1,000.

Jacob Kissack, a 2008 graduate of Campbell County High School in Gillette, was selected as the traditional scholarship winner. That scholarship is worth $3,000.

VFW reschedules turbine event

The commissioning ceremony for three small wind turbines at the Casper Memorial VFW Post that was planned for Nov. 24 was rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Dec. 9, according to a release.

Post 9439 will become what local VFW officials believe will be the first VFW post in the nation to use on-site wind turbines to generate a portion of the facility's electricity. The project is part of Rocky Mountain Power's Blue Sky renewable energy program.

UW/CC offers Paris study trip

This summer, the University of Wyoming/Casper College Center and the UW International Programs Office will offer "Paris as Text: The Transition from the Medieval World to the Modern", a statewide course that will help students understand the transitions from medieval to modern political thought, while experiencing the layout and architecture of Paris, according to a release.

The class will meet from May 26-29 via videoconference statewide. The trip to Paris is scheduled from June 2-16. Students can take the course for credit or noncredit. Additional tuition costs will apply for students taking the course for credit. All students enrolling in the course must pay a $500 deposit for partial travel costs by Dec. 10. Various scholarships are available.

Dean Morgan conducts canned food drive

Dean Morgan Junior High's student council will sponsor a canned food drive, according to a release.

Cans collected Monday through Dec. 11 will be donated to the Central Wyoming Rescue Mission. Classes will challenge each other to see who can acquire the most food, and those who weigh in with the highest total pounds will be rewarded with breakfast.

On Friday, student council mentors will sponsor a school-wide dance to contribute to the cause. Admission will be two cans of nonperishable food.
