Whether it's through e-mail or at the front of a classroom, Casper College instructor Paul Marquard can teach a student the ins and outs of astronomy, physics and engineering.

Marquard, an instructor for 22 years, was recently named a Master Distance Educator for Casper College for his work in teaching astronomy courses online.

He served as the college's Director of Distance Education from 2001 to 2007. He also was on the award's selection committee previously, which made being named a master educator this year a special treat.

"It was very exciting," Marquard said. "It was neat to be the one selected instead of the one selecting."

Teaching online is not without challenges, Marquard said. E-mailing back and forth can be time consuming and frustrating for students.

And Marquard said he generally prefers to be in a classroom, though he's developed stronger relationships with some of his online students than the ones he sees in class.

"I think I am much better in the classroom than online," Marquard said. "I miss student interaction."

Marquard estimated nearly 15 percent of Casper College students take distance education courses, and the number likely rises to about 50 percent in the summer.

Distance courses are important for those students who work full-time or have other schedule conflicts that prevent them from being in an actual classroom, Marquard said.

"I think it's huge," he said. "It's a fantastic opportunity for students."

Even if students can't complete their specific degree through online courses, they can knock out the majority of their general education requirements, Marquard said. But taking a course over the Internet isn't for everybody.

"Some people love them, and some people really don't," Marquard said. "Its up to the individual to determine whether that's their cup of tea."
