Run for Africa, bike blessing highlight events

The scheduled Yesness Park cleanup has been canceled, due to the winter-like weather in May that Casper experienced Friday.

A 5K Run for Africa, sponsored by the Natrona County High School Honor Society, starts with registration at 8:30 a.m., at the Ramada Riverside Terrace Hotel. It will benefit and send school supplies to young children in Kenya. The entry fee is $12 or $7 with a $5 donation of school supplies. Food, fun, music, and prizes are part of the event. The race will begin at or around 9:30 a.m.

Wyoming Central ABATE and the Christian Motorcyclists Association presents the 28th annual Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Day events, the unofficial start of the riding season.

The blessing of the bikes begins at 10 a.m., and is available until 11:30 a.m., in the parking lot at the Open Bible Church, next to Hobby Lobby on East Second Street.

The awareness parade organizes from 11:30 a.m. to noon, and leaves at noon sharp from the east Wal-Mart parking lot. The parade ends at the Kmart parking lot, followed by a free lunch for all participants at Butch's in Evansville.

If weather permits, a poker run will take place with registration at Butch's after lunch. The last card must be in by 7 p.m.

A "multimember" garage sale sponsored by Qwest Pioneers will be held at the Qwest garage, 300 N. Walsh, today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will raise funds for many charitable organizations.

The YMCA hosts Junior Olympics local skills competition, which tests kids ages 8 to 13 in basketball, soccer and tennis. Winners of the local competition will advance to a regional competition in June. For more information, call Jennifer Lang, 234-9187, ext. 3116.

The impact of addiction, especially as it concerns to women, will be discussed by Stephanie Moles, executive director of Women's Heart, at the AAUW (American Association of University Women) spring luncheon at noon at the Casper Petroleum Club.

Education, equity and positive societal change are the focus of AAUW's mission for women and girls.

The Democratic Women's Forum sponsors "It's about time … how self care improves the quality of your health care," during its luncheon at the Casper Petroleum Club.

Retired professor Beverly Taheri will present the program on making the health care system and its providers work better for you. Democratic Women's Forum meetings are open to all interested persons regardless of gender. This is the final meeting of the season for the forum.

NAMI-Casper will celebrate National Mental Health Month by showing a free movie at the NAMI office at 133 W. Sixth St., at 5:30 p.m. The movie "Radio," was inspired by a true story and stars Cuba Gooding Jr., and Ed Harris. The public is invited.

On Sunday, the Casper Ice Arena is hosting Snow Day In May from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Two-thirds of the ice rink will be set up for ice skating and one-third of the ice will be for playing in the pile of snow that is prepared just for the event. Free refreshments will be provided.

VFW Post 9439 and Auxiliaries, located at 1800 Bryan Stock Trail, hosts a benefit breakfast for Meals on Wheels from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. All proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 10.

The 2008 Music of the Masters Concert features the Casper College men's and women's choirs and the Collegiate Chorale at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Church. Donations will be accepted at the door, and proceeds help defray the costs of music-related events.
