October is breast cancer awareness month and the Angels Program and Cancer Resource Center of the Wyoming Medical Center Foundation have a month's worth of activities planned to heighten awareness and raise money.
"We want to make people aware of the importance of self breast exams and mammograms for early detection and prevention of cancer," said Angels Program coordinator Cheryl Campbell. "There is nothing to be afraid of unless you don't get checked."
The Angels can help with free mammograms for those who can't afford the screening. Call 577-2971 for more information.
Here are the activities planned this month:
* Say 'Boo' to Cancer: Businesses are invited to paint their front windows with that message and use a pink ribbon logo on a pumpkin, ghost, or whatever they choose. Windows will be judged on Oct. 30, and prizes will be awarded.
* Scare the C out of Cancer: Who doesn't like to wear jeans to work on Fridays? Businesses may buy stickers for $5 each or $20 for the month of October (five Fridays). Your employees can purchase the stickers from you for the privilege of wearing jeans to work every Friday in October.
* Sock It to Cancer Week: Have a crazy sock or hosiery contest during the week of Oct. 13-17. Each business will judge the craziest at their location; then a citywide contest will be held at the Casper Ice Arena from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 26. Photos of winners will be on display and votes may be cast for $1 in the jar of the favorite. Winners will be announced Oct. 30, and a prize will be awarded.
* Shopping in the Pink: Angels host a craft and gift "bootique" in the South Link of the Wyoming Medical Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and on Oct. 23. Anyone wishing to donate items to the sale may contact Cheryl at 577-2971 or drop items off to 1139 E. Second St., by Monday or Oct. 20. Proceeds go to the Angels program.
* In the Pink at the Rink: The Casper Ice Arena participates on Sundays all month from 1 to 3 p.m., in a variety of ways - Sunday, wear pink and receive a free drink; Oct. 12, donate your change to make a change in the lives of cancer patients, with the child bringing in the most change winning a gift certificate to the mall; Oct. 19, wear crazy socks and cast your $1 vote for the craziest; Oct. 26, wear a costume or come dressed as a scary hockey player or ice skater. Prizes will be awarded.
* Don't be baffled, win the raffle: Angels art therapy class is raffling a beautiful quilt made by cancer survivors under the direction of Gail Anderson and Irene Ellis. The quilt includes hearts and butterflies and symbolizes the heart of a cancer patient is to gain new life through treatment. Tickets are one for $5 or five for $20 and can be purchased at the foundation office, 1139 E. Second St. The drawing will be held Oct. 30.
For more information on any of the activities, call Cheryl Campbell at 577-2971.
