Police on Thursday arrested a Casper man suspected of providing a judge with a forged doctor's letter in an attempt to get a new trial date.
Jesse James Jewart, 21, was booked into Natrona County District Court on suspicion of forgery.
A Casper Municipal Court officer told police Jewart had presented a judge with a letter purporting to be from a doctor in Montana, according to a sworn statement by a Casper police officer. The letter included a brief paragraph from the physician, explaining that she'd treated Jewart at the beginning of this month.
Jewart had requested a new trial date due a serious car accident in May.
The court investigated the letter and found the doctor was actually based in Houston. When the officer called the doctor, she said Jewart wasn't one of her patients and that she didn't practice in Montana, according to the officer's statement.
Police say Jewart maintained that he did see the doctor in Montana.
He was being held Friday afternoon at county jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.
