It's just 6.2 miles from the interstate, but it seems much farther. Nestled midway between town and the mountain exactly at the end of the pavement on Deer Creek Road is the Deer Creek Community Hall, a pristine white cement block building with a concrete floor and kitchen.
The windows are from the old Glenrock Refinery; the kitchen counter is from the soda fountain in the old Commerce Block drug store. The curtains are brand-new, made by homemaker club members.
On Saturday night, families from town - any town - and families from the country are welcome at an old-fashioned box social and dance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Town of Glenrock.
"We're calling it 100-year music and a 100-year dance," said Rita Redig, one of the organizers. She grew up seven or eight miles from where the hall's location, at the base of the mountain.
Her mom, Elois Lockett Miller, was raised just a mile away, up the creek.
The hall was the dream of the Deer Creek Homemakers Club when it was constructed in 1965. Since then, it's been used as a meeting hall for the homemakers and the once-thriving Deer Creek 4-H Club, as well as for Christmas parties, weddings, anniversaries and baby showers.
"It hasn't been used a lot lately. The heat is a problem, our members are getting older and people are changing," Redig mused as her Mom pored over scrapbooks and other snippets of history tucked into a trunk.
The first order of fun on Saturday night at 6 will be to share the area's history, and Redig hopes others will want to tell stories.
Redig's worried that folks won't participate in the box social portion, and if they don't, they'll pay $5 at the door to cover the cost of the Jim Trantham Band.
The box social is as easy as packing a lunch for two and decorating the box. Folks will bid on the box based on how it looks and the one who brought the box will share it with the winning bidder.
"We've got a lot of single women coming," Redig laughed. "We need to find some single men."
But Redig said women can also bid on boxes and make a new friend while they enjoy supper.
And men certainly are welcome to pack a lunch and decorate a box, as well.
Redig, along with Norma Jean Grant, will try to keep things organized, but they are not auctioneers and she admits that the box social portion will likely be more of a "sale" than an auction.
Families are welcome, and Redig suggests that the box they bring contain enough food for a family. Then other families might bid on the lunch, and families could eat together.
If the box social is not a draw, Redig hopes folks will come for the great, old-fashioned music and dancing that will start about 7:30 p.m. Entry just to the dance is $5. Inside the hall, it's no smoking and no alcohol, although Redig admits there's no stopping people from doing either outside.
Town planner Kathy Patceg will be there, and she's offered to teach old-time dances to anyone who might want to learn.
Chet Stevens and his wife, Laura, helped establish the building going more than 40 years ago. He called the square dances back in the day, and Redig is hoping he's up to coming to the party. If he is, she'd love for him to call for a while, she said.
"We're really hoping this goes good," Redig said. "And we really hope we make enough to cover the cost of the band."
To that end, contributions beyond the $5 entry fee would be gratefully appreciated.
