Murder trial begins today

The trial for Jeffrey Lee Carter, accused of killing Johnny Shane Moody, is scheduled to begin today in Natrona County District Court.

Carter, 46, faces a second-degree murder charge and could receive a life sentence if convicted.

Police charged Carter and two other men for fatally stabbing Moody, an acquaintance, in a July 18 assault on East A Street. Just after the incident, a police officer found Moody, 48, in an alley with stab wounds to his chest and back.

Jonathan Jelsma, 21, pleaded guilty in November to aiding and abetting an assault with a deadly weapon as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, who dismissed a murder charge against him.

Also in November, District Attorney Michael Blonigen and the attorney for Juan Carlos Diaz, 16, filed documents to move Diaz's case to juvenile court. He was charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

Carter's trial is expected to last one week.
