NIC plans Bradley retrospective

Beginning Jan. 23, the Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center will present a retrospective exhibition of David Bradley, a Minnesota White Earth Chippewa, as part of its "Contemporary American Indian Art" series, according to a release. "David Bradley: Restless Native, the Journey" will continue through May 10.

Bradley's paintings combine a colorful, folk, narrative style with political and social messages concerning Native American life and culture. He also draws from a rich source of art history to craft his jolting, colorful, playful, humorous and subversive paintings. Utilizing a flat, decorative style, Bradley reformulates art historical imagery such as the Mona Lisa or Grant Wood's American Gothic to speak to political concerns regarding Native American treatment, life and history.

Bradley has called his life and his art a symbolic vision quest. His work often expresses his philosophical and political ideas. Through his art he continues to campaign against American Indian stereotypes and the exploitation of Native art.
