An autopsy is set for today for the inmate who died early Monday morning at Natrona County Detention Center.

The examination will take place in Loveland, Colo., said Natrona County Chief Deputy Coroner Gary Hazen. The coroner's office has decided to get an outside agency to handle the autopsy because of its relationship with the Natrona County Sheriff's Office - which oversees the jail.

Larimer, Colo. County Coroner Patrick Allen will perform the autopsy.

The 46-year-old inmate had been in custody at the detention center since a June arrest by Mills police on drug possession charges. At the time of his death, he was being housed in the jail's infirmary section.

There were no signs of foul play. The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation into the man's death, because the man died at the county jail.

The Natrona County Coroner's Office hasn't released the inmate's name because next of kin haven't been located. That effort is taking more time than normal, Hazen said.

"Normally we can get it done in just a few hours," he said.

The coroner's office has received assistance in tracking down the inmate's next of kin from an FBI analyst.

"I think we know where they are," Hazen said. "It's just a matter of finding them."

In addition to the FBI, the coroner's office uses a variety of methods to find a deceased's next of kin, including Internet searches, old medical records or information from friends and acquaintances. In 20 years, Hazen can recall only a single instance where next of kin couldn't be found.

The inmate had type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes. Natrona County Coroner James Thorpen said Tuesday he suspected the man's death was probably a complication from that disease.

Complications from type 2 diabetes include stroke and heart and kidney disease, according to the American Diabetes Association.
