The Converse County Sheriff's Office launched a search for Eric Cubin of Casper on Thursday morning before Cubin called shortly before noon and said he was safe, a sheriff's office official said.
"He was not rescued," said Don Schoenleber, with the Converse County Sheriff's office. "Mr. Cubin strayed away from his hunting partners and came out of his own accord today."
Cubin is the son of U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo.
Schoenleber said while elk hunting, Cubin may have been "a little farther away than he thought" and decided to "put up for the night."
Cubin's hunting partners reported him missing early Thursday morning, Schoenleber said.
Roughly seven members from the Converse County Search and Rescue team began the search in the Medicine Bow National Forest, about 35 miles southwest of Douglas. Natrona County Search and Rescue was also called but did not ultimately need to help, Schoenleber said.
Schoenleber said Cubin was in "great shape" and "good humor" when he called the sheriff's office.
