Trial scheduled for Jan. 25
A concert promoter pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of writing a bad check to pay the Steve Miller Band for the group's show in Casper last fall.
Robert Alfred Green, 48, entered his plea in Natrona County District Court before Judge Thomas Sullins. He is charged with one count of felony check fraud.
A trial is slated to begin Jan. 25. If convicted, the Scottsdale, Ariz. man faces up to 10 years in prison.
Green is accused of not having enough money in his bank account to cover a $90,600 check he wrote to the rock 'n' roll band for performing at the Casper Events Center last November.
Gillette attorney Nicholas Carter is representing Green. Carter declined to comment on the case Tuesday.
Casper police began to investigate Green in May when a band representative contacted police to report the concert promoter's check didn't clear because of insufficient funds. The check was written on Green's personal account and given to the band while they were in Casper, police said.
Green spoke with a detective in June and admitted he didn't have enough money in his account to cover the check, according to an affidavit written by the officer. He also claimed the band's agent said he would hold onto the check until there were sufficient funds in the account.
Band representatives denied those claims, according to police.
Green was on supervised release for a federal mail fraud conviction at the time of the alleged offense, according to documents filed in the U.S. District Court for Arizona.
In 2007, he was convicted of running an illegal money-making scheme while selling used cars in Scottsdale. According to a copy of the plea deal Green made with federal prosecutors, he defrauded a used car dealer by sending him bad checks.
In June, federal prosecutors asked a judge to revoke Green's supervised release after his probation officer accused him of traveling to Mexico without permission.
The Steve Miller Band has produced several hit singles, including "The Joker" and "Take the Money and Run."
