No extra garbage collection for two weeks
City garbage trucks won't be hauling extra trash during the first two weeks of November and instead will be picking up bagged leaves.
"We are making the collection change to support one of our diversion priorities, which is keeping leaves, branches, and other yard waste out of the landfill," said Cynthia Langston, solid waste manager at the landfill, in a press release.
Leaves and other yard waste consumes 12 percent of the city's landfill space, according to the release, and diverting yard waste from general trash disposal will free up valuable landfill space. Langston said yard waste would eat up $300,000 of landfill space over the next decade if the waste isn't separated.
There's no limit on the number of leaf bags the city will collect per household, but the leaves must be in tied bags and placed at least three feet from trash Dumpsters.
Residents can find their extra leaf collection day on the city's Web site at www.casperwy.gov or by calling 235-8246.
Crews respond to Emerald Acres fire
The Mills Fire Department and the Natrona County Fire District responded Monday evening to three separate structure fires in the Emerald Acres Subdivision. Upon arrival, crews found one mobile home in flames, the remains of a camp trailer that had burned and a small grass fire.
Also found burning on the property were two small buildings and a rubbish pile, all of which were extinguished. Crews from the Natrona County Sheriff's Office, the Wyoming Medical Center and the Natrona County Rehab Unit assisted in responding to the fires.
There were no reports of injuries. All of the fires appear to be connected, and they remain under investigation.
