In college, we called them seventh-year seniors.
They were the people who partied a little too hard, took a few too few classes each semester, and wound up still in college after seven years of trying when they should have been well on their way to the real world.
In the case of Deedie Swett, 36th-year senior is more like it, according to a story in the Laramie Boomerang. This courageous non-traditional student, who began her college career in 1973, graduated from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor's degree in business administration on May 9.
Her issue wasn't so much partying or lack of ambition. Instead, it was more about life and a career getting in the way.
Swett's message?
"It is never too late," she said in the Boomerang story. "Anybody that has 10 years left to work might as well get their degree."
If there were a reality show called "What not to do at your child's sporting event," a Green River mother's alleged actions would have made her the star.
The woman was led off the track at Bill Bush Memorial Stadium in Lander after allegedly grabbing a student, according to a story in the Lander Journal. Two boys had supposedly broken her son's cell phone, which apparently upset her. (Understandably so - if she didn't have insurance on it and those kids did break the phone, she's looking at about $300 minimum to fix it.)
Not so understandable, though, would be yelling profane words at, threatening or grabbing a child that's not your own.
Think of your worst high-school related nightmare, and then imagine your mom being escorted off the property by police, in front of a crowd of other students and parents. Yikes.
Speaking of cell phones, hallelujah! The iPhone has finally come to Wyoming. Now I won't have to listen to my husband whine about how unfair it is that AT&T doesn't provide service here. I only have to suffer through one more year of complaints until our current cell phone plan ends.
