Health Expo, book sale highlight busy, busy day

The end of March means the start of crazy busy in Casper.

Events today range from free health screenings to practically free books of all genres; self-help from a day-long gardening conference, a discussion about choice gas; and several evening fundraising events.

From morning to night, here's just a peek.

The 35th annual Blue Envelope Health Expo is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Casper Events Center. The Expo features a wide variety of health screenings and educational information.

A 2-mile run/walk in conjunction with the Blue Envelope Health Fair starts with registration at 8 a.m., a warmup clinic at 8:30 a.m., and the event at 9 a.m., at the front entrance to the Casper Events Center parking lot. Lap walking is available indoors on the concourse, beginning at 8 a.m.

While you are picking up your blood results at the Blue Envelope Health Expo, get rid of your old medications. Wyoming Medical Center pharmacy, University of Wyoming pharmacy students, and Casper College pharmacy tech students will be collecting expired and unwanted medications. The RX Roundup will take place at Wyoming Medical Center's booth at the Expo.

The 13th annual Spring Gardening Conference is at the Agricultural Resource and Learning Center, 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Registration at the door is $45. Fee includes coffee breaks and lunch. Speakers include Panayoti Kelaidis, Mark Hughes and Mike Kintgen.

The 37th annual Friends of the Library Book Sale opens at 9 a.m., and runs to 5 p.m., with great bargains for all readers, as well as movies, music, puzzles and games.

The Boy Scouts' third annual High Plains Shootout, a Riverbend District fundraiser, is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Stuckenhoff Sport Shooters Complex. Divisions are youth 11-17 and adult, 18 and older.

Natrona County High School hosts the 2008 Wyoming Scholastic Chess Championships at NC. Registration is $10. Five rounds of play begin at 9:45 a.m., each student has 30 minutes. Sections include kindergarten through third grade; kindergarten through sixth grade; kindergarten through ninth grade; and kindergarten through 12th grade. Contestants are responsible for their own lunch. Any student in the state of Wyoming is eligible. There is no elimination.

Casper College drawing and painting professor Justin Hayward will be the Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center's artist of the month for March. He will host a figure-drawing workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the museum, 400 E. Collins. The adult workshop, which will feature a clothed model, is $45.

There are a limited number of openings still for a Women's Build program offered by Habitat for Humanity, The Heart of Wyoming on Saturdays at 1 and 3:30 p.m.

The classes are designed specifically for women to develop or improve their construction skills for public or private use. The training is free to women of Natrona and Converse counties. Class size is limited. To register, call 259-0765.

Grant Street Grocery, 815 S. Grant St., hosts a free tasting from 2 to 5 p.m., of various imported and domestic cheddar cheeses, Mary Anne's soups and dips from Douglas and epicurian butters.

Ja. It is hard to believe, but German Stammtisch has been enjoying each others' company for five years. The anniversary party starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Izaak Walton Club house, which is behind of Fort Caspar near the fairgrounds. Take finger food or a dessert to share.

{M3The Casper League of Women Voters {M3is holding a forum starting at 1 p.m., at the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Building, 2211 King Blvd. The forum will ask the question, "Is Choice Gas Working?" The League has invited three local gas suppliers and various state and local officials to attend. The forum is open to the public.

The Fort Casper #4 Order of the Eastern Star invites the public to an exciting evening of dining and dancing at the Casper Shrine Club, 1501 W. 39th St. The evening begins with the social hour at 6:30 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by a prime rib dinner with all the 'fixins.'

Casper's only seven-piece band, Swing Sounds, will take the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. To purchase your tickets to this exciting event contact any Fort Casper #4 Eastern Star member, or call Shirley at "The Diamond Tree," 577-1644.

The Kelly Walsh Quarterback Club hosts an adults-only Casino Night fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m., at the Casper Elks Lodge grand ballroom, 108 E. 7th St. Tickets are $25 per person and include drinks, food, fun and lots of games, as well as funny money to play and drink, door prizes, a cash prize and a silent auction.
